How to use Character Counter

  1. Type or paste text.
  2. Check the character and whitespace-free totals.
  3. Edit text to meet your limit.

How are emoji counted?

Counts use Unicode code points. Some combined emoji contain multiple code points. A destination service may use different counting rules.

No sign-up is required. The calculation or transformation happens in this browser tab and the result is available immediately.

Practical guidance

The character counter updates as you type and shows both the full count and a count with whitespace removed. It is useful for forms, metadata and other text limits.

What the two counts include

The full count includes letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces and line breaks. The without-whitespace count removes spaces, tabs and line breaks before counting.

Symbols count as characters. That includes currency signs, mathematical symbols and other visible marks, alongside letters, numbers and punctuation.

Emoji and combined characters

Counts use Unicode code points. Some visible emoji and accented characters can contain more than one code point, so another service may report a different total if it counts grapheme clusters or storage units.
